Primary memory is a short-term memory that actively holds information in the human mind. It engages in encoding, storage, and retrieval of information concerning past events in the human mind. Primary memory is activated by an influence on perception, attention, and learning. Therefore, information is stored in the memory and is vital for the performance of cognitive tasks. The prime characteristic of primary memory is storage. In the human brain, information is commonly stored in the primary memory. The stored information can be retrieved when needed especially immediately. It is short-term because people forget information especially concerning past events. Contents in the memory instinctively decay over time.

Psychologists suggest that this information should be periodically memorized in order to lengthen the period of storage. Primary storage manipulates the stored data. It organizes the information received in the memory for comprehension. Information that is well comprehended in the human brain is retrieved in an organized manner. Primary memory is flexible because of the effect of chunking. It involves meditating information by grouping it into manageable groups especially numbers. Therefore, it increases the ability to store information for a longer period.

Information is processed in the human brain through the course of action of obtaining, keeping, and utilizing the information. Accessed information is from the outside environment into the sensory registers. Information input is controlled by perception through senses due to close attention. Perceived data is directed to the working memory, which has an inadequate aptitude. It is then directed to the short-term memory and continual rehearsal shifts data to the long-term memory. In order to use the data, it is directed back to the working memory for retrieval. When information is moved out of the area in the process, it is forgotten. Memory retrieval can be unreliable especially when data is stored in the short-term memory. This is because short-term memory spontaneously decays. Certain factors affect the primary memory in human beings. Influence of the long-term memory affects the primary memory. Other factors include reading aloud, character differences, and pronunciation time. These factors are likely to improve the primary memory.
